Have you ever hired a dud?

Having team members come in and out of your business is one of the most costly, and mostly preventable wastes of money in your business.

I find one of the biggest mistakes builders make when hiring new team members, is simply trying to find somebody who can perform the tasks that the builder either no longer wants to do, or hasn’t got time to do themselves.

I find it to be a very one-dimensional way of recruiting.

I suggest that you look into the future and visualise a pathway for new team members, so they can grow with the business. So you need to create a “purpose statement”, not a job description. A purpose statement outlines their purpose but doesn’t dictate the specific tasks they’re asked to do, and it leaves room for their imagination and contribution to the team! A job description is always task oriented, which shuts down their imagination and turns them into a robot.

And finally, ensure you don’t make the mistake of hiring purely for skill. All the best recruiters on the planet will tell you, hire for attitude, because skills can be taught.

I get why people hire for skills, because of the sense of urgency they have in getting somebody up to speed. But pandering to that sense of urgency can be one of the most costly decisions you make, because inevitably only focusing on skills, you end up hiring a person that isn’t the right fit for the team, attitudinally,  which is detrimental to team dynamics and productivity.

In the words of the recruiting gurus “hirer slow, fire fast!”
