Stop complaining, and do something (different!)

Talking to as many builders as I do, one of the biggest consistent complaints I hear is “no time”.

I often hear, “I like what you say, and I know I need to do this, but I just don’t have the time!”

That is such a load of bullshit!

Whether you like it or not, or whether you agree with it or not, the simple fact of the matter is every single person has exactly the same amount of time every day. So why is it that some people just get heaps done, and make great progress, and others seem to be running around a lot but achieving very little.

By the way, as you’re reading this, which camp do you think you’re in?

So let me say straight up, there is no such thing as “I didn’t have time”, or “I don’t have time to do that”. The truth is, you chose not to do it! And that’s not my issue, if you choose to not do something, that’s none of anybody else’s business. But here’s the deal… When you make a choice, you MUST own the consequences of that choice too!

As Stephen Covey says “you pick up one end of the stick, you pick up the other”.

Everybody has the right to make their own choices, but please own those choices, and the consequences that come with them, instead of whining and bitching about how things didn’t turn out how you’d like, and blaming everyone & everything else. This is TOTALLY an “Inside Job”

So, what’s the best way to overcome this problem?

I believe the simplest way, and the quickest way, is to change your language.

For example, instead of saying “I didn’t have time to do this”, say, “I chose not to do this”. Basically, wherever you  blame the lack of time, in your language, replace it with the words around choice. I guarantee you, if you take on this challenge your behaviour will change and your results will change along with that.

Imagine standing in front of somebody, and instead of giving away control, and bullshitting to them, by saying “sorry mate I didn’t get time to do that” and saying instead, “sorry mate I chose not to do it”. What difference would that have on you choices in the future! The second example means that you are taking responsibility for your choices instead of consistently making excuses and giving away control by blaming the lack of time, which just isn’t true.

I expect this article might ruffle a few feathers. But I’m more than happy to enter into a conversation and answer any of your questions or respond to you comments. just put them in the comments section below.

Of course if you “don’t have time” to ask these questions I fully understand!
